Shorter Works

I have a hard time writing "short"--if you've read my books, you know that I'm most comfortable with a longer format that lets you really sink into a story and get to know the characters.

But occasionally, I do find stories to tell that don't require a canvas as big as the one a novel provides. This page lists some of my shorter works and non-fiction articles, and I will be providing links to some of the stories and articles in the near future.

If you like my stories, please consider supporting me by purchasing one of my ebooks.

"A Light on the Horizon" originally appeared in the Stardates: Infinite Celebrations holiday anthology from the now-defunct Dreams Unlimited publishing company.

It's a science fiction story centering around the pagan Celtic holiday of Beltane (May Day). On a distant planet where a single day lasts an entire year, a stern theocracy holds sway and books are forbidden knowledge, their possession punished by harsh exile. The discovery of an ancient encylopaedia by a young woman holds both the promise of salvation and the threat of utter ruin for her and her family.

Protector of the House logo

"Protector of the House" is an unpublished prequel to Glass Souls. I originally wrote this story as a submission to Sharon Lee and Steve Miller's Low Port anthology, but it didn't make the final cut. Ah well, such is the life of a writer...

In fifth-century Constantinople, two young runaway slaves live a precarious existence as pickpockets. Marcus and Honoria are brother and sister, freeborn citizen of Gaul illegally captured and sold after their parents are murdered. One fateful morning, they attempt to rob one of the members of the fabulously wealthy House of the Rose, only to find that they've bitten off more than they can chew when one of the House's supernatural Protectors initiates a relentless pursuit.

Slowly, Marcus and Honoria come to realize that the Protector's interest in them runs deeper than merely avenging a slight to the House...and they fear for their souls as well as their lives.

Partnership Article

"How Do You Write Together? or, Sweetie, Can I Borrow Your Brain?" a non-fiction article that originally appeared in the Romantic Times Newbies' Handbook, which answers the question that I'm most commonly asked in interviews: how do co-authoring relationships work?
